Liverpool Plan Hopeful Move to Sign £19m French International Striker

Liverpool just missed out on making a late deadline move for Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema. The Merseyside club have been strongly linked with a move for the French international who has failed to show his best form at the Bernabeu. Reports in Spain suggest that Liverpool were determined to sign Benzema after Fernando Torres said he wanted to join Chelsea. But the two club clubs did not have enough time to agree a move for the prolific forward.
Despite Liverpool making moves to sign Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll, the Reds are still expected to make a fresh move for Benzema at the end of the season as they look to assemble one of the best forward lines in Europe.

Liverpool have set their sights on quite a capture here. Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema has come in for a fair bit of stick in recent months for his errant form in front of goal but the 23 year old has shown during his stint in the Bernabeu first team that his game is not just about putting the ball in the back of the net.

Jose Mourinho was forced to give the former Lyon man an extended run in the first team when Gonzalo Higuain was out with a long term injury and Benzema was chastised for not scoring regularly, just two La Liga goals all season, but at the same time he was helping his side to a consistent run of form and was laying on a fair few assists.

The French international has also netted nine cup goals and was a prolific marksman in Ligue 1 so he has the ability to get back into a rich vein of form and perhaps that could happen at Anfield? A number of sides are said to be considering a move for Benzema and Liverpool Director of Football Damien Comolli is a big admirer and hopes to lure the powerful striker to Anfield.

Liverpool have of course just signed two strikers in Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll but do not have much else in the way of fire-power as David N’Gog is still to prove himself and Dirk Kuyt is now a little unused to playing up front having been converted from an out and out striker by Rafa Benitez. The club does also have young attackers Daniel Pacheco, Suso and Nikola Saric, all of whom have shown good potential to make it in the big time.

However another ‘marquee’ signing will provide a statement of intent to other Premier League sides to show that the club’s new owners are willing to invest in youthful additions to their squad.

“I have a lot of feelings for Arsenal and it means something great to me … I would be sad to leave it, but you have to think about yourself and, with the career goals I have, I cannot be sitting on the bench.

“I am at a stage of my career now where I think I should play every game and I should develop and score goals.”

According to Peter O’Rourke at Sky Sports News, Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina has not ruled out the possibility of moving to Manchester United, who may be in the market for a goalkeeper when Edwin van der Sar retires after this season. When asked about United, Reina told Ondo Sera,

“Yes, well Van der Sar will hang up his gloves in the summer so of course they are looking … I can’t do anything. I can’t say anything logically as I have a contract with Liverpool.

“Of course one likes to fight for titles and be in a team that does that. We always fought to be in the Champions League and try to win the title. But unfortunately it hasn’t been the case in the last couple of years.”
